HS019 - Containment Level 3 Principles and Practices

This full day course gives an overview of the legal requirements for high containment laboratory work and facility design features, operational practices and safety management principles and practices which enable safe working. The Biological Safety Adviser and internal/external expert(s) in high containment laboratory work/practices will present short talks on the topics which will be interspersed with small group exercises.

For research, technical and teaching staff starting work at ACDP Containment Level 3, other staff closely involved with facility operation.

Objectives

By the end of this course, participants should be able to:

  • Understand the safety practices for high containment laboratory work.
  • Understand the design and operation of safety critical features in a facility.
  • Understand and be able to plan and implement safety management procedures including emergency protocols for a facility.
  • Be able to conduct a risk assessment of work according to the relevant legislation and guidance.
  • Suitability: For research, technical and teaching staff starting work at ACDP Containment Level 3, other staff closely involved with facility operation, high containment laboratory staff requiring a refresher session.
  • Understand the relevant legislation underpinning high biological containment laboratory work
