HS017 - Off-site and Fieldwork Risk Assessment

This 2.5 hour course will introduce the principles for conducting a risk assessment for a safe fieldwork project under the relevant H&S legislation and Fieldwork H&S guidance / sector best practice. The course will provide advice on identifying potential hazards, evaluating risks and determining the best safety measures and arrangements for contingencies, emergencies and crisis management during fieldwork projects. Resources available within QMUL and externally for fieldwork planning, information gathering and further training will be identified.

Suitability:

QMUL staff and postgraduate students undertaking fieldwork for research purposes in any setting (e.g. geological, geographical, botanical, zoological, social surveys, interviewing, off campus/hospital clinical visits, home visits for clinical trial work, filming); leaders of undergraduate field trips; Safety Coordinators / Officers from Schools / Institutes / Directorates conducting fieldwork .

  • • Be able to identify hazards that may be encountered during fieldwork, assess the risks and identify appropriate ways of avoiding or minimising them
  • • Be aware of relevant legislation underpinning safety during fieldwork
  • • Have an appreciation of the arrangements and measures required for safe fieldwork, including contingencies, emergency procedures and crisis management arrangements
  • • Be able to conduct and record a risk assessment for their own fieldwork
