HS018 - Laboratory Safety for Non-Research Staff

This 2.5 hour course gives an overview of the hazards (e.g. biological, chemical, radiation and potential risks, which non-academic staff may encounter in the laboratory environment during their duties, such as maintenance works, transport of packages, goods and waste, installation of equipment and services and security patrols.

Short talks on the hazards, potential risks and control measures to enable safe working will be presented and interspersed with small group exercises

Objectives

By the end of this course, participants should be able to:

  • By the end of this course, participants should be able to: Identify hazards present in the laboratory environment (e.g. biological, chemical, radiation.
  • Identify warning signage and safety information for these hazards.
  • Evaluate potential risks during the course of duties in the laboratory environment.
  • Be able to identify the control measures applicable for the work (personal, procedural and management).
  • Be aware of emergency procedures for particular hazards.
  • For non-academic staff from QMUL Professional Services departments who enter the laboratory environment for various duties (e.g. maintenance, transport of packages, goods and waste, installation of equipment and services and security patrols)
