RD211 - Feelings about feedback: how to manage emotions and use feedback to improve your writing

Audience: All researchers (including staff and PhD students)

How does feedback on your writing make you feel? Many writers are familiar with the roller-coaster of emotions that feedback can provoke - pride and disappointment, delight and despair, soaring happiness and blind rage. The emotional aspects of feedback are rarely explored and yet they can have an enormous impact on the trust between students and staff that is so important for learning. Comments on writing can play into your sense of yourself as an academic writer, built up over many years. In this half-day workshop, we explore different ways of managing the emotions of feedback so they don't become obstacles to improving the quality of our writing.

Objectives

By the end of this course, participants should be able to:

  • be more conscious of the emotional reactions feedback can provoke and understand how these can get in the way of moving forward as a writer
  • be more aware of your identity as an academic writer
  • better understand how your ideas about yourself as a writer can affect the way you interpret feedback
  • understand the importance of the feedback conversation for improving your writing in your discipline
  • be more confident about taking an active role in the feedback dialogue
