GT100 - Teach your first session - Humanities and Social Sciences

This course is aimed at new members of staff, teaching assistants and PhD students in Humanities and Social Sciences who have not taught in Higher Education at all, or who have not had any responsibility for planning sessions. If you have taught in higher education before, you should not book for this course.

Objectives

By the end of this course, participants should be able to:

  • Identify and articulate appropriate aims and outcomes for a session of teaching
  • Analyse their own needs in preparation for teaching
  • Select and evaluate appropriate methods and techniques of teaching for their discipline and situation
  • Conduct classes and student interaction in an appropriate professional manner
  • Identify and assess strategies to deal with challenging teaching situations
  • Give useful feedback to students on their progress as appropriate
  • Undertake evaluation and reflection on their teaching
