RS406 - Planning for an academic career (For PhDs and Postdocs)

Audience: PhD Students and Postdocs considering an academic career path

In this workshop we examine typical academic career progressions in the UK and how ready you might be to take the next step on that career path. We will ask you to begin to formulate your own career plan, including your Plans A through Z, and how to be resilient if things don't work out to plan.

Objectives

By the end of this course, participants should be able to:

  • Have a better understanding of academic career progression paths and how university departments evaluate promotion eligibility.
  • Drafting an academic career plan (Your Plan A)
  • Learning career resilience and how to cope if things don't go to plan.
  • Recognising opportunities and formulating alternative career plans (Plans B through Z)
