HS029 - GM Risk Assessment and Notification

This 2-hour course will provide an introduction to the requirements for working with Genetically Modified (Micro) Organisms (GMMO / GMO’s) in the contained laboratory setting. The topics covered include: the principles and legislative requirements of a GM risk assessment (using QMUL GM risk assessment templates), identifying GMMO / GMO hazards and risks to humans and the environment, establishing correct Containment level for the work and the notification process internally within QMUL and externally to the Regulatory Authority.


By the end of this course, participants should be able to:

  • Know the hazards and risks arising from working with GMO / GMMO’s
  • Understand the GM Containment Level requirements
  • Know the measures required to contain GMO / GMMO’s from start of work through to waste disposal and storage
  • Be aware of relevant legislation underpinning GM work
  • Be able to conduct a risk assessment of their GM work
  • Be aware of the notification process for GM work.

Suitability: For laboratory research, technical and teaching staff working with or intending to work with genetically modified (micro) organisms. (e.g. new PhD and post-doctoral staff who intend to conduct GM work).

This course covers GM work generally conducted at Containment Level 1 and 2 laboratories.

Please note: From Sep 2014, background information in handling of biological or clinical waste, disinfection & decontamination, personal protective equipment, transport and storage are now covered within the ‘Working Safely with Biological Hazards’ course (HS020). Those attending the ‘GM Risk Assessment and Notification’ course are recommended to attend the ‘Working Safely with Biological Hazards’ course beforehand, see MyHR / CAPD booking system for details and bookings.
