HS024 - Safe Management of Laboratory Hazardous Waste

This 2 hour course will provide a detailed look at the regulatory requirements and College management arrangements (from laboratory to final disposal) for safe disposal of hazardous waste typically produced from laboratory activities (e.g. clinical, GM, biological, chemical).

The session will include practical scenarios for the management of laboratory hazardous waste (waste categorisation, waste treatment and protocols, waste transport, accidents or emergency response) conducted as small group exercises.https://www.esdcourses.org.uk/listmastercourse.php

Suitable for Staff (technical, research, portering, estates) and postgraduates responsible for managing laboratory hazardous waste.

(Those attending this course should have previously attended the College H&S COSHH Risk Assessment in Laboratories and/or Working with Biohazards course(s) (or equivalent course/s from other institutions).

The safe management of radioactive wastes will NOT be covered in this course, this is covered in Radiation Protection Supervisors training /Ionising Radiation Users training.


By the end of this course, participants should be able to:

  • • Know the EU and UK regulatory framework underpinning the safe management of hazardous waste
  • • Understand the different hazardous waste categories and criteria for assigning waste streams
  • • Understand the College management and arrangements for laboratory hazardous waste
  • • Be able to apply the knowledge gained into writing / implementing laboratory protocols / risk assessments for safe management of hazardous waste
  • Suitability: Staff (technical, research, portering, estates) and postgraduates responsible for managing laboratory hazardous waste.
