RS012 - How to promote your research to the media

Audience: all academic staff, particularly those who are new to working with the media

Why do some stories make a big splash in the media and others disappear without a trace? How can you raise the profile of your own work through the media? This session will explore how the media chooses what to cover, how journalists gather stories and how the QMUL Public Relations team work effectively with different news organisations to get our stories across to wider audiences.

Objectives

By the end of this course, participants should be able to:

  • Different types of media and how they work: including print, broadcast, online, local
  • How media organisations define news and key elements of a news story
  • Evaluate the newsworthiness of your area of research
  • Know how to take advantage of social media opportunities while avoiding common pitfalls and mistakes
  • How to engage with the media and the PR team to evaluate and promote your research
