HS005 - Hazardous Substance Risk Assessment (COSHH)

This course will introduce the skills required to carry out a hazardous substances risk assessment, in order to carry out a thorough risk assessment in line with the Control of Substances Hazardous to Health (COSHH) Regulations 2002, The Dangerous Substances and Explosive Atmospheres Regulations 2002 (DSEAR) and UK environmental legislation.

This course will provide attendees with the ability to identify different hazards (physical, health and environmental), the risks involved, and the appropriate health and safety control measures to put in place for safe working. The course is based on Health & Safety Executive’s ‘five steps for risk assessment’ and the COSHH ‘Hierarchy of Control’ of hazardous substances.

It also include a practical ‘table-top’ hazardous substance risk assessment exercise using safety data sheets and will provide information on practical measures such as emergency procedures and waste disposal.

Duration: 3 hours classroom time plus completion of an online knowledge quiz (open book) on QMPlus in attendee’s own time (approximately 30 min).

Certification: An online completion certificate will be generated upon satisfactory completion (pass mark 80% or greater) of the online knowledge quiz on QMPlus by the attendee. The access details for the online knowledge quiz will be provided by the course tutor at the classroom.

This course is not accredited by any training accreditation body.

Suitability: This course is open to all QMUL staff and postgraduate students who wish to gain the skills needed to carry out a hazardous substances assessment. This is suitable for all who work with hazardous materials, especially suited for those who will be using hazardous chemicals in research or teaching laboratories

Requalification / Refresher: Attend and complete the refresher course once every 3 years. (HS015, Refresher – Hazardous Substance Risk Assessment (COSHH).


By the end of this course, participants should be able to:

  • Understand types of hazards (hazardous substances) and note legislation covered by this course
  • Identify hazards that arise from an experimental process / Interpret safety data sheets
  • Understand how to carry out a hazardous substance risk assessment
  • Identify appropriate controls for hazards to minimise risk / Understand the hierarchy of control
  • Review a hazardous substance risk assessment / Understand hazards of, and controls for asphyxiants
