HS026 - Decontamination and Sterilisation

This course will provide a detailed look into the decontamination and sterilisation of biologically hazardous materials (clinical samples, pathogens, Genetically Modified (GM) Agents) and equipment / devices that may be used with these materials.

The safety principles and requirements to inactivate different biologically hazardous materials under the Control of Substances Hazardous to Health (COSHH) Regulations and GM (Contained Use) Regulations will be detailed.

Topics will include the principles of decontamination and sterilisation; appropriate use of decontamination and sterilisation methods; types, examples, compatibility, validation and limitations of disinfectants for laboratory work; sterilisation methods in the laboratory setting and their application including limitations, compatibility and validation.

Duration: 2 hours classroom time plus completion of an online knowledge quiz (open book) on QMPlus in attendee’s own time (approximately 30 min).

Certification: An online completion certificate will be generated upon satisfactory completion (pass mark 80% or greater) of the online knowledge quiz on QMPlus by the attendee. The access details for the online knowledge quiz will be provided by the course tutor at the classroom.

This course is not accredited by any training accreditation body.

Suitability: Research and Technical staff and postgraduates handling biologically hazardous materials.

Those attending this course should have previously attended the ‘Working Safely with Biohazards’ course HS020 (or equivalent course/s from other institutions).

Requalification / Refresher: not applicable at present.

Objectives

By the end of this course, participants should be able to:

  • Know the safety principles and requirements for decontamination and sterilisation for laboratory work
  • Understand the applications of decontamination and sterilisation methods
  • Understand the criteria for correct use of decontaminating agents such as disinfectants
  • Understand the criteria for correct use of sterilisation methods
  • Be able to conduct a risk assessment to select the best method of inactivation for biologically hazardous materials used in their work
