RS009 - Introduction to Marketing and Comms

Audience: Suitable for all staff, but particularly those in PS and academic staff with responsibility for marketing, comms, and recruitment activities in Schools

The Directorate of Marketing & Communications is responsible for building and maintaining the reputation of QMUL, communicating its achievements and aspirations to both staff and students, and the outside world, through a variety of channels. This session will give you an insight into what we do and will show how you can help us to publicise your own work and raise QMUL’s public profile. We’ll look at what makes a good story or successful campaign, our content channels (including web stories, media coverage, social media, blogs, internal bulletins, podcasts and video), key audiences, and top tips for working with the PR, Internal Engagement and Student Recruitment Marketing teams.

Objectives

By the end of this course, participants should be able to:

  • An understanding of what PR, communications and marketing are (and how they differ from advertising) and how this activity can benefit institutions like Queen Mary
  • Be able to identify your key audiences, inside and outside QMUL, and recognise the channels and tools we have to help you reach them
  • Know how to work with marketing and communcations effectively and what outcomes you can expect from engaging with us
