RS496 - Planning for an academic career (For PhDs and Postdocs)

Being a successful and effective academic researcher involves more than producing outstanding research and publishing well. In this two part workshop series we will explore what else you need to be thinking about now to give yourself a good start.

The first part of this workshop is hosted as a short online module on QMplus (will be live on 30.01.2020). Participants are asked to view a video and review some resources on QMplus that will cover essential information about the UK Higher Education sector such as:

•Research Excellence Framework (REF), Teaching Excellence Framework (TEF) and Knowledge Exchange Framework (KEF)
•The academic funding landscape including UKRI
•Types of university in the UK
•The academic career path in QMUL and beyond
•Developing a good track record as a researcher
•Career case studies of academics

Following the online module, we will meet for a face-to-face workshop that will include a series of discussion and interactive elements, where we will cover a number of themes including:

•Does and academic career align with my personal values?
•Do I have what it takes to thrive in academia?
•Role models in academia and what we can I learn from them?
•What can I do to enhance my chances of academic career success?
