RD307 - Finding your Voice as an Academic Writer

Audience: research staff and PhD students in later stages of their PhD

Preparation: you are invited to bring samples of your own writing, on which to practise the techniques learnt. Please also bring to the workshop an extract, book or journal article by an academic whose writing you admire.

As well as conducting research that is rigorous, original and significant, academics are also expected to be skilled writers, able to communicate their research findings clearly and persuasively to their peers and to a wider audience. Yet while publication in leading academic journals is increasingly critical to success for both individuals and institutions, even experienced researchers may struggle to find a distinctive 'voice' that engages the reader without loss of academic rigour. This intensive and interactive half-day workshop explores what it means to develop an authentic voice of your own. Its chief goal is to help you identify and refine your voice as a writer, enabling it to be heard above the clamour of competing voices in your field.
